Industry Data

The U.S. Market for Healthy Ingredients and Products.

There are many estimates of the size and growth for the U.S. market. According to the Natural Marketing Institute (NMI),U.S. consumers spend more than US$20 billion on vitamins, minerals, herbals and other dietary supplements. Other estimates place this figure at US$22 billion. The U.S. market for dietary supplements has annual growth between 4% and 10% depending on the specific category. NMI also estimates that U.S. consumers spend more than US$64 billion on functional/natural foods and beverages. This category is projected to grow by more than 50% in the next 3 years. The U.S. market for “cosmeceuticals” is estimated to be at least US$4.2 billion with annual growth of more than 8 percent. Driven by many factors, the market and demand for healthy, natural ingredients and products is growing rapidly.

The U.S. Market for Herbs, Botanical Extracts and Ingredients from India

Herbs, botanical extracts and ingredients from India already have found success in the U.S. market. Products such as Senna and Psyllium are extremely important in the U.S. In fact, both of these products are approved as actual OTC drug ingredients with FDA-approved claims. Very few natural ingredients have risen to this level of acceptance by regulators and the marketplace. Other ingredients that are already being sold in the U.S. market include aloe, Ashwagandha, Brahmi Bacopamonniera, coleus forskohlii, fenugreek, guggul, neem, pippali (long pepper), sida cordifolia, and many more. Whether in traditional Ayurvedic form, or in newer standardized extract form, these materials have great potential for market growth in the U.S. By combining well planned scientific support, regulatory compliance, quality assurance and marketing efforts, India can stimulate this growth and develop a large market for its products.
